Today I woke up to Matt’s work cell phone ringing at 0500. He’s acting COB (Chief of the Boat) while the current COB is on vacation. The phone call was to let him know there was a tsunami warning for the islands of Hawaii. Since then we’ve been wide awake watching the news. It’s been a pretty wild morning as we have three phones continually ringing (Matt’s COB phone, my cell phone, & our room phone) along with the warning sirens going off every half hour or so. A voice comes over the loud-speaker advising us what roads and bridges have been closed. It’s pretty spooky actually.
Matt and I were just down in Waikiki last night enjoying a wonderful dinner at The Cheesecake Factory. The streets were alive with hundreds and hundreds of happy people enjoying a great Friday night. Today seeing pictures of the same areas on the news is surreal. It’s like a ghost city.
The current estimate of the tsunami’s size is about 7 feet but the second wave could be larger. There’s really no true way to tell the size until it happens. It’s scary. It’s hard to tell when it will be over too.
I’ll be posting updates on my Facebook page and Twitter so if you are a follower of mine, you’ll see updates as often as I can make them. So stay tuned…
